Schools and institutes
The Bartlett is home to 13 schools and institutes with a community of more than 5,000 students and staff. Individually, our departments explore their fields in-depth, striving to push the boundaries of knowledge in their specialist areas:
Bartlett Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis (CASA) - an interdisciplinary research institute focusing on developing a science of cities, with the goal of making cities better places to live through technology and data science.
Bartlett Development Planning Unit (DPU) - a renowned institute supporting socially just and sustainable urban development and infrastructure in the global south.
Bartlett School of Architecture (BSA) - an exciting and innovative architecture school that questions what architecture could and should be. Alongside professional training and accreditation, the BSA considers the wider and deeper significance of the built environment.
Bartlett School of Environment, Energy and Resources (BSEER) - a collaboration between four leading institutes focusing on energy, environmental design and engineering, sustainable heritage, and sustainable resources:
UCL Energy Institute - provides world-leading learning, research and policy support on the challenges of climate change, the transition away from fossil fuels, and global energy security.
UCL Institute for Sustainable Heritage (ISH) - delivers sustainable solutions to cultural heritage problems through cross-disciplinary research and training.
UCL Institute for Environmental Design and Engineering (IEDE) - investigates interactions between the built environment and health, wellbeing, productivity, energy use and climate change.
UCL Institute for Sustainable Resources (ISR) - focused on research into the globally sustainable use of natural resources and training future leaders in the field.
Bartlett School of Planning (BSP) - linking theory, policy and practice in urban planning and development to drive advances in the UK and international planning profession.
Bartlett School of Sustainable Construction (BSSC) - an international centre for teaching and research dedicated to developing sustainable approaches to construction and infrastructure, project management, real estate and economics.
UCL Institute for Global Prosperity (IGP) – aims to change the way we conceive and run our economies and rework our relationship with the planet to create prosperity for all.
UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose (IIPP) - focuses on changing how public value is imagined, practised and evaluated to tackle societal challenges.

Locations and facilities
The Bartlett is situated across three locations in central and east London, each offering cutting-edge facilities and spaces for learning, design and making and exhibitions. Our London setting puts us in a unique position to understand and directly impact the built environment field. For our students, joining The Bartlett offers an exciting chance to learn in the world’s top ranked student city (QS 2024).
We are located in buildings across UCL’s Bloomsbury campus in central London, as well as two in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Stratford: UCL East and Here East.
Our Bloomsbury campus has been UCL’s home since the university was founded in 1826. Today this central London hub offers a wealth of opportunities and facilities for students. The Bartlett’s schools and institutes are located in several Bloomsbury buildings, including the iconic 22 Gordon Street building, home to The Bartlett School of Architecture.
UCL East is a purpose-built UCL campus spanning two buildings featuring multidisciplinary research labs, studios, exhibitions and community spaces, as well as student accommodation and facilities.
Here East is an innovation and technology hub with ground-breaking research facilities in transport, robotics, manufacturing, architecture, infrastructure and environmental analysis.
Funding
A range of funding options and financial awards aimed at assisting both prospective and current students with their studies are available from UCL, The Bartlett faculty, and our individual departments.
This includes the Bartlett Promise Scholarship to attract students from a broader range of backgrounds to tackle the lack of diversity in the built environment. These scholarships cover students’ fees, living and study costs for the duration of their degree programmes, and recipients also receive mentoring, personal support and careers advice throughout their studies.
