More about Allan

Allan graduated from the MA Design: Products and Furniture course and now lectures at NTU, alongside his freelance furniture design work.

What made you choose to study at NTU?

“My motivations for studying at postgraduate level were so I could extend my design skills with a view to lecturing at higher education level. NTU stood out to me as they have an enthusiastic design department and excellent workshop and technical facilities.

“What came across most before I came was the friendly and caring nature of the department from the staff I spoke to.

What were your experiences before studying at NTU?

“After graduating in 3D design, I worked as a freelance furniture and product designer, working for consultancies such as Conran Associates, Benchmark and Bang & Olufsen. Much later, after doing a further two years at university, i moved into secondary education to teach Product design up to A Level standard, while continuing to work on freelance projects, in my spare time.

Were you involved in any live projects or briefs during your studies?

“Working with a small team from the MA & MSc group, we undertook a series of design studies for Wilko’s Blox toy range. Two of the ideas have been taken up by the company and are expected to be in all the Wilko stores by Autumn 2020. While we can’t disclose the design details, the ideas will give the brand a unique approach to the building brick market.

“What I enjoyed about this project was the opportunity to work with a very focused and enthusiastic client who had a genuine passion for their customers. Just as important was working within a team where ideas were shared and each of us worked to our individual skills to make the project a resounding success.

What module did you find most enjoyable?

“My major project was my favourite task. It allowed me the time to experiment with new ideas and methods which challenged me at every stage. The final outcome produced a great sense of achievement of which I am proud.

What do you think of the facilities available to you?

“The course provided a range of good facilities, the studio is a superb are in which to work and study while providing space to store coursework safely. The workshops are outstanding. At university level, there is everything we need and easily accessible, I am grateful for all the help and support i got from Outreach, the Library and student services. Good coffee shop too!

Tell us a bit more about the staff on your course

“Bella Malya is an outstanding course leader who genuinely cares about her work and her responsibilities towards her students. As a tutor, they don’t come any better, in my view. Technical staff in the workshops and labs are very supportive and always ready to help.

What advice would you give to a prospective student?

“Work with passion and come out of your comfort zone and embrace the opportunities of new challenges. The product design department at NTU provides the opportunities to excel.”
