Hey there! I’m Hoang Le, hailing from Vietnam, and currently pursuing my MSc in Accounting and Finance at the University of Birmingham. Let me take you through my experiences as an international student, from the application process to settling into life in Birmingham.

The application process

Applying to the University of Birmingham was quite different from my undergraduate experience back home. Instead of a rigorous entrance exam, it relied more on past documents and a personal statement. What’s great is that I could also apply for scholarships to cover my tuition fees, as long as I showcased my potential and goals. The whole process was straightforward, with all the necessary information available on the university website. The admissions team was also quick to respond to any queries I had, making the journey smooth. Within a month, I received my offer letter – a moment of joy and excitement!

The UK education system

One of the things I’ve noticed about the UK education system is its focus on critical thinking and practical application of knowledge. It’s not just about memorizing facts but understanding concepts deeply. Plus, there are ample opportunities for extracurricular activities and personal development, which enrich the learning experience.

Landing in Birmingham

When I first arrived in Birmingham, I must admit I felt a bit disheartened seeing many famous public places under construction. However, my spirits lifted as soon as I stepped onto the university campus. The sight of the iconic Old Joe tower against the backdrop of the Green Heart filled me with a sense of wonder, like stepping into a fairy tale. Getting essential documents like my student card and BRP was hassle-free, thanks to the university’s guidance and support. The welcome events during the first weeks were also a great way to make friends and get acquainted with campus life.

Activities on campus

I love spending time in the libraries on campus. Whether it’s diving into study materials or simply relaxing and enjoying the view of the Green Heart, it’s a place where I feel productive and at peace. The library services are top-notch, and having a cafeteria nearby for a quick bite is a bonus that keeps me fueled for the day.

Exploring the city centre

What I enjoy most about Birmingham City Centre is its multicultural vibe. From diverse food options to easy access to Vietnamese ingredients, it feels like a home away from home. China Town is a favorite spot of mine, offering a plethora of delicious food choices. There’s also an indoor market nearby where I can find fresh produce at great prices. Another perk of living in Birmingham is its central location, making it easy to travel to different cities by train. Plus, having a university station just minutes away from campus is incredibly convenient.

In conclusion, my journey as an international student in Birmingham has been nothing short of amazing. From navigating the application process to embracing campus life and exploring the city, every moment has been filled with excitement and growth. I can’t wait to see what the future holds as I continue this adventure in the vibrant city of Birmingham.
