Course Description

The course will be delivered by practitioners who have a wealth of psychosexual experience between them. This is currently the most northerly psychosexual course available within the UK.

The course takes a Psycho-Bio-Medical Approach to the field of Psychosexual Medicine You will be introduced to the course and basic sexual and relationship theory. You will then study Relationships: Models and Interventions; and Diversity of Psychosexual Needs before taking the Psychosexual Practitioner module that is delivered over one academic year. You’ll also be required to complete an Introduction to Postgraduate Research module. The second year is closely linked to the practice of psychosexual therapy for which you will take a year-long placement in a psychosexual therapy clinic close to your area of employment.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must have graduate status and will come from fields with a relevance to psychosexual practice (i.e. medicine, nursing, midwifery, counselling & psychotherapy, sexual health.

Student Destinations

Our current graduates are working as Medical Consultants with psychosexual therapy input within the NHS; as Psychosexual Therapy Consultants/Managers; and also as Lecturers/Senior Lectured within Higher Education.

Module Details

Year 1

Year 1 modules are taught in 3 separate week blocks

  • Module 1 – Basic Psychosexual Therapy (semester 1)
  • Module 2 – Relationships: Models and Interventions (semester 2)
  • Module 3 – Diversity of Psychosexual Needs (semester 2)
Year 2

Year 2 involves the psychosexual therapy placement (1 day/week) and with 6 study days; as well as attendance on a weekly research methods module that is delivered over 2-3 hours/week in one semester.

  • Module 4 – Introduction to Postgraduate Research (semester 1 or 2)
  • Module 5 – Psychosexual Practitioner (double module delivered across one year)
Year 3 & 4

Years 3 and 4 involve practitioner research 

  • Module 6 – Masters Dissertation (across 2 years)
