Course Description
You will examine the cultural significance of leisure and sport, and how this phenomenon can be both a unifying and divisive force in our society. You will gain a thorough understanding of how sport and leisure can have an enormous effect on people’s lives from a local to global level.
You can focus your studies on a particular area that interests you. This can range from the technical and legal aspects of sport doping, to how tourism and sport impact on different cultures around the globe.
Other key areas of study include how leisure, sport and cultural activity can be used worldwide in responsible ways to bind communities and improve the economic and social conditions for people at all levels of society.
Entry Requirements
Applicants should either have at least a second class honours degree or have equivalent experience or training, normally from within the work environment. All applications should be supported by a reference, either academic or professional; all applicants should satisfy our University English language requirements.
IELTS 6.0 with no skills below 5.5, or an equivalent qualification. The University provides excellent support for any applicant who may be required to undertake additional English language courses.

Our course can help you progress your career in the leisure and sport industries, particularly dealing with policy and equality issues. You would also normally have the option to progress onto further study in a research capacity, especially in the areas of sport, leisure, tourism and cultural studies, or another social science.

Leisure & Cultural Spaces (20 credits)

This module explores key theoretical debates around space and place within sociology and cultural geography of leisure and culture.
- Diversity & Discrimination (20 credits)

This module draws on contemporary social science perspectives to examine critically ‘diversity’ and apply a range of different explanations to analysing persistent inequalities in a range of sport, leisure and physical education professions.
- Leisure, Sport & Globalisation (20 credits)

This module encourages students to relate and apply sociological theories of globalisation to current issues in sport, leisure and tourism.
- Research Methods (20 credits)

This module provides an understanding of the value of styles of research beyond those students might initially expect to adopt themselves, while also giving them the chance to focus on approaches particularly relevant to their interests.
- Major Independent Study (40 credits)

This module allows students to engage in the negotiation, planning, implementation and evaluation of a major independent study of research relevant to their personal interests and course.
