Jessica De Lord: I’m in charge of my Master’s, which I think makes the course quite unique

Jessica loves the creative freedom her MA offers, as her confidence grows with every challenge.

I have a first class degree in Creative Writing and have written and published an article in Portsmouth’s Star and Crescent. During work experience at the New Theatre Royal in Portsmouth, I conducted a creative writing workshop, helping primary school students turn their own creative stories into short plays.

I really wanted to continue studying creative writing at Master’s level as there were modules that would challenge me. I wanted to push myself beyond my limits.

I also wanted more time to study independently, the chance to get to know new people and the opportunity to learn more from my lecturers.

Enjoying more creative freedom

The creative freedom of the MA course appealed to me. I’m in charge of my Master’s, which I think makes the course quite unique.

There are set modules but we are allowed to do what we want with the assignments and write outside of our comfort zone. We can get the support we need but also have the creative freedom to challenge ourselves.

The University always has our best interests at heart. There is a great connection between students and staff and it is a very inclusive University.

At Portsmouth, I learnt that constructive criticism can only make you stronger. If you don’t try something new – even if you’re worried about it – you won’t know what you’re capable of.

Being open to learning new experiences will boost your confidence and independence.

Rising to the challenge of independence

I find it interesting to learn on another level and to prove to myself that I am able to do it.

With managing a Master’s it is important that you are willing to research and learn beyond what you are expected to do. It is a step up from an undergraduate degree.

A Master’s is very much independent study and it can be daunting. I’m so glad I took that risk. You learn the skills to study more independently.

I find it challenging but I am getting a lot of support from my lecturers and I feel close with my course mates, knowing we are all in the same boat.

Becoming a more confident writer and person

I have grown so much in my writing ability, thanks to my tutor and lecturers.

Attending the University of Portsmouth has made me more independent and confident in myself. When I joined the University I wasn’t sure if writing was for me, but I can say now there isn’t anything else I’d rather do.

I’d like to go into writing and publishing, ideally writing my own young adult fiction novels. I plan to get work experience or an internship, which will hopefully set me up for a good graduate scheme in the world of fiction writing.
