Tell us about your career path since graduation.

Since graduating in history of art and architecture from the University of London, I have worked as a grants casework officer for English Heritage. English Heritage sponsored me to take an MA in architectural building conservation at De Montfort University, Leicester. I then worked as an urban surveyor, and a conservation officer. During my PhD at Plymouth I lectured in architectural history and on the MA building conservation course.

Has your career path changed since graduation?

Yes, I am just starting a new post as registrar of the Devonshire Association which promotes the study of science, literature, and the arts in Devon. I am a member of their buildings section committee and have been asked to join the committee for the Devon Buildings Group.

What is the best, most exciting or fun thing that you have done in your career?

The most exciting aspect of my work to date has been the access I’ve had to some amazing historic buildings whilst they were being conserved – including the inside of the roof of the Henry VII chapel at Westminster Abbey, and looking Prince Albert in the face at the top of the Albert Memorial in Hyde Park.

What advice would you give to anyone wanting to get in to the same line of work?

Get as much hands-on experience as you can, even if it involves volunteering.

Studying at Plymouth helped me to organise my work in a rigorous and methodical way, and to think more critically about my source material.

What is your favourite memory of studying at Plymouth?

The great friendship I developed with my director of studies, Linda Watson.

Do you stay in touch with other Plymouth University alumni or lecturers?

Yes, and I hope to continue to do so. I’m hoping they will all join the Devonshire Association.
