Abdulrauf Waziri Laminu from Nigeria is a qualified medical doctor. After starting his career in a hospital, working in Paediatric, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Medicine and Surgery departments, he volunteered at a Nigerian refugee camp, before making the journey to Swansea to begin his postgraduate studies.

Citing Swansea University’s global reputation and ranking, its location (just minutes from the beach) and its bursary and scholarship opportunities, Abdulrauf chose to pursue the MSc in Public Health and Health Promotion with the University’s College of Human and Health Sciences.

He said: “Swansea University is one of few universities in the world that combine Master’s in Public Health and Health Promotion. The flexibility of the course provides ample time and opportunity to engage in individual reading and research to excel in the academic program. Lectures are interactive and there is group work in almost every teaching session, which provides an avenue for students to engage in discussion with their peers and come up with collective ideas.

“I really enjoyed the opportunity to take a work placement as part of the course. I had the opportunity to experience working at a professional public health and health promotion level in the UK. It helped me to see how the theory I learned during the course can be applied in public health practice and increased my confidence and competence for job opportunities at the end of my program.”

Abdulrauf’s studies were aided by the University’s Centre for Academic Success, which provides academic study skill support to students at all levels.

“Being an international student with little experience in academic writing, the Centre for Academic Success were always available to improve my writing, communication, and study skills through their courses and one-on-one meetings.”

Since finishing his course, Abdulrauf has returned to Nigeria to work for Medicines sans frontiers as a Deputy Medical Coordinator. He adds: “Swansea University has been a fantastic choice for me. My Master’s program has helped me to grasp the concepts and tools needed to help bring sustainable solutions to health problems besieging my country.”
