The Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (SCPHN) (Health Visiting) course from the University of Bolton is designed to provide you with a comprehensive overview of the health visiting profession, with the aim of equipping you with both the theoretical knowledge and practical skills to succeed in your career. Our programme was the first in the country to be accredited by the UNICEF UK Baby Friendly Initiative, which recognises programmes that support mothers in effective breastfeeding. We also provide training in the Solihull Parenting Approach, which supports practitioners in promoting emotional health and wellbeing in children and families.

You can find their name, email address and phone number in the Programme Contacts section of this page.You must have an active entry on Part 1 or Part 2 of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Professional Register (or have applied for the same).You’ll also need at least 120 credit points at Level HE4, 120 credit points at Level HE5, and 120 credit points at Level HE6, or RP(E)L equivalent (see explanation below). Academic credits (RPL) should normally be for recent studies in the areas of nursing and health studies, or the behavioural or social sciences. For instance, you may have an honours degree.You’ll be required to produce satisfactory professional and academic references and pass Occupational Health screening. You’ll also be required to successfully complete an online numeracy test achieving the pass mark of 80% unless you already have a current NMC recorded prescribing qualification. This numeracy assessment will be undertaken with support from a representative from your sponsoring organisation who will provide the University with confirmation of completion. You’ll also be required to complete a self-declaration regarding your completion of this pre-course assessment.The Nursing and Midwifery Council also requires self-declaration of good health and good character for the programme.RP(E)L information – Prior learning and experience and learning are considered when deciding on any advanced standing to which you may be entitled. This may be based on qualifications you’ve already gained (Recognition of Prior Learning – RPL) or it may be based on making a claim for significant work experience (Recognition of Prior Experiential Learning – APEL). The process of granting you appropriate advanced standing will be overseen by the programme lead for this course and an RP(E)L panel. When making a claim for RPL against a relevant academic module you’ll be required to produce evidence in your professional portfolio that demonstrates how your prior learning relates to your impending role as a specialist community public health nurse. RP(E)L for exemptions from modules in this course – NMC Standards permit no more than a third of a programme to be credited on the basis of prior learning. Any applications for accreditation of prior learning will be considered prior to admission, on an individual basis, by the RPL panel. Claims need to demonstrate achievement of learning outcomes in theory and practice as defined by PgDip Specialist Community Public Health Nursing module specifications. This course involves regulated activity so you must gain an Enhanced Disclosure certificate from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) before starting your studies. Charges are payable to cover the cost of the DBS Enhanced Disclosure application and annual registration with the online (Normally your sponsoring organisation will organise this.)
