  • DeadlineStudy Details:

    MSc 1 year full-time

    2 year part-time

Course Description

The International Labour Organisation estimate there are over 100 million workers affected by accidents or through ill health. Companies are increasingly recognising that the protection of employees is of financial benefit and this degree programme utilises a range of approaches including process safety, behaviour based, management systems and adaptive systems to develop appropriate health and safety culture.

A rewarding and ever-developing field, this course will allow you to enable people’s welfare and wellbeing at work. From helping to prevent work-related illness and stress to understanding how motivation can impact on health, the course is varied and constantly developing. You’ll not only improve the quality of people’s lives, but do so in an area where, owing to the very nature of the employer-employee relationship, it can often be hard for individuals to put their health first.

This course has an emphasis on developing professional skills and is delivered by a mix of academics with a practice background and practitioners working in industry. The University’s strong links within the industry and professional bodies mean that this course is highly regarded and well respected internationally.

For those of you with appropriate experience the programme will help generate greater understanding of your subject and becoming a competent practitioner who is able to influence health, safety and environmental improvement in the workplace. For those new to OH&S and working in organisations it prepares you for appropriate entry level roles.

You will develop legal, technical and scientific knowledge to enable you to recognise, assess, and problem solve risks. You will gain insight into health and safety in a variety of industries including agriculture, construction, transport, and manufacturing, and will be able to develop an organisation’s safety and wellbeing policy, respond to accident and ill health reporting, and improve your negotiation, advocacy, management, leadership, communication and teamwork skills.

All course tutors are practising consultants and have strong links with professional bodies, which ensures that you will be studying the latest developments and practices. Many are also active in research and you will be encouraged to undertake research which will be recognised within the industry.

If you do not wish to study the full MSc, you can apply to the PGDip where you study only eight modules, omitting the Dissertation.
