What is Conservation GIS?
With a huge demand for professional ecologists and conservation practitioners with applied Geographic Information Systems (GIS) skills, this course provides core knowledge of GIS to support conservation action and evaluate its biodiversity outcomes.
Available online or on campus, as a four module Postgraduate Certificate or individual modules providing Postgraduate Credit, this unique course has been designed not only to develop core operational skills in GIS, but to give you experience of how GIS can be applied within longer conservation processes. You’ll be able to integrate both basic and advanced GIS skills into your everyday conservation tasks and activities, primarily using the QGIS open-source system.
This course is delivered by lecturers with extensive industry experience in using GIS across different parts of the conservation sector, both in the UK and internationally. Students will learn to access and use a range of data types including those from habitat surveys, species monitoring, UAVs and satellites. There’s also the opportunity to progress and transfer credit, upgrading to our MSc in Applied Ecology.
Our Conservation GIS modules are delivered on campus and online at the same time one day per week, with students choosing from the outset whether they wish to attend face-to-face or online (our ‘Distance Learning (synchronous)’ Study Option). This synchronous delivery ensures students receive timely guidance and advice on the extensive range of software operations that we cover. Sessions generally run 09:15 to 16:15 (UK time) on a Thursday or Friday. Students are assessed entirely through coursework.
For those with limited and/or without recent experience of GIS we recommend registering for the Postgraduate Certificate, which will entail taking all four of our Conservation GIS modules.
If you regularly use GIS and are looking to upskill, you may wish to register for our Postgraduate Credit option to take just one, or more, of our modules. If you’re uncertain about which modules are right for you, please contact the Course Leader, Dr Mark O’Connell.
