Course Description

Additive Manufacturing, or 3D printing, is an exciting new field, which uses a range of diverse technologies for equally diverse applications. It is now possible to print everything from aerospace parts to biological tissue and even houses! This course is designed to give you the skills required to utilise these new technologies to their full potential.

You will have access to the Additive Manufacturing lab in the new Engineering Innovation Centre, housing some of the latest AM equipment. Learning will be largely project based, with hands-on use of equipment and software. The course will include relevant industry visits, guest speakers and industry related projects.

You will work alongside our research active staff with the possibility of continuing on to PhD research. Students will be given the opportunity to build their own 3D printer (to keep) and develop new or enhanced Additive Manufacturing technologies.

Entry Requirements

Entry can be made to the course through holding at least a lower second class award of BEng (Hons) or BSc (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Materials Engineering or other related subjects.

Student Destinations

The course is suitable for engineers who have recently graduated as well as those with experience who are seeking to extend their knowledge, or update their qualifications with a view to promotion or other new position. The award covers both technical and commercial aspects of additive manufacturing. It will help students gain employment in high value industries such as aerospace, or start their own AM related businesses.

  • MP4702 – Advanced Materials and Materials Selection

OPTIONAL MODULES

Three of the following:

  • MP4401 – Build your own 3D Printer
  • MP4402 – Product Innovation
  • MP4403 – Reverse Engineering
  • MP4580 – Engineer and Society

* Please note that running of optional modules is conditional on minimum student numbers and staff availability.

Placements

  • EL4101 – Professional Placement – Up to 12 months
  • EL4102 – Work Placement (60 credits) – Up to 3 months
