The MA in Military History seeks to explain why wars occur, to highlight how warfare has changed through the ages and to show how the military interacts with wider human society. These issues will principally be addressed through the study of British military history, both within the European context and the wider world.
The broad historical narrative will provide students with the opportunity to explore specific military themes in depth, to contribute to the wider academic debate on the relationship between the military and society, and to conduct original research.
The County of Cheshire and the City of Chester have had a long association with the British military and there is a wide range of relevant and accessible source material relating to the study of British military history deposited locally at the Cheshire Military Museum (which represents the four regiments recruited in the old county of Cheshire), the Cheshire Libraries Service, the Merseyside Maritime Museum and at Liverpool University Library.

This course allows students to study military history across a wide chronological range and within a broad canvas. Students study the development of military history from the ancient world up to the Cold War and are able to look in depth at topics of their choice, both in the optional modules and the Research Dissertation.
A 2:1 honours degree in a relevant discipline or equivalent qualification is required.
Consideration will be given to those who hold a lower classification who can demonstrate they are capable of performing at the level required to complete the course successfully.

Military History is an excellent grounding for a wide range of careers and, in recent years, our graduates have gone on to positions in the heritage/museum industry, journalism, law, teaching, social work, and management/administration in both the public and the private sector. Several students proceed to take higher degrees, including MPhil and PhD at Chester.
Each student selects three modules: one module from Group A, one module from Group B and one other module from either Group A or Group B.
