Masters Degree Description

The PG Dip/MSc in Cognitive & Behavioural Therapies: High Intensity Training is a rigorous, challenging and highly rewarding clinical skills training programme. It is aimed at mental health professionals with experience of working clinically within an IAPT service (e.g. as a psychological wellbeing practitioner) who wish to become:

 

(a)  Competent at assessing and treating adults with depression and anxiety disorders using evidence based cognitive & behavioural treatment protocols.

(b)  Accredited with the British Association of Behavioural & Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP) as Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapists.

Entry Requirements

Applicants will:

  • have a core professional training in mental health (normally with a science-based degree), or demonstrate eligibility through the BABCP Knowledge, Skills & Attitudes pathway
  • have a minimum of one day a week in face-to-face therapy practice in an IAPT service in the role of high intensity trainee
  • have in place suitable BABCP-accredited supervision arrangements.

Applicants will also be required to attend an interview.

Student Destinations

This programme provides the academic and clinical experience required to achieve accreditation with the BABCP as a cognitive behavioural psychotherapist.

A certain proportion of trainees will access this programme alongside a dedicated one year fixed term contract as High Intensity Trainee; whereas a certain proportion of trainees will self-fund their studies and conduct their clinical practice within an IAPT placement as a high intensity trainee. It is envisaged that those who successfully complete the course will be able to apply for posts as High Intensity Therapists.

Module Details

 

Programme Structure:

  • Core Skills in CBT: Anxiety & Depression (PS7207)

This introductory module is delivered in the format of an induction block. It provides an introduction to CBT and the core skills required to assess & treat depression & anxiety disorders. The primary aim of the module is to equip trainees with the basic skills required to begin working with clients within the role of High Intensity Trainee.

  • Science-Theory & Practice of Behavioural & Cognitive Therapy: Depression & Anxiety (PS7201)

This double module is intended to equip trainees with the knowledge and fundamental clinical skills required to operate as scientist practitioners in terms of assessment; diagnostic classification; and selection & implementation of evidence based treatment protocols for adults with depression and anxiety disorders.

  • Behavioural & Cognitive Psychotherapy: Complex Presentations (PS7204)

The aim of this module is to enable students to develop the clinical skills required to (a) assess, conceptualise & treat; or (b) manage & refer patients with complex presentations of depression and anxiety.

  • Supervised Clinical Practice: Depression & Anxiety (PS7208 for full-time route, or PS7202 & PS7205 for part-time route)

This module is delivered and assessed by means of clinical supervision within the IAPT placement. The aim of the module is to enable students to develop under clinical supervision the cognitive behavioural clinical competences required to assess and treat adults with depression and anxiety disorders.

  • Research Thesis (PS7206)

In this module students will conduct an independent research study under supervision.
