You will have the ability to tailor sections of the programme to your specific areas of interest and we will develop your academic, practical, and soft skills throughout the programme. By the end of the programme, you will be able to critically analyse methods of current practice or develop new insights within applied sport science. You will be able to plan, design, and execute research studies. Most importantly we with teach you a wide range of techniques required to become an accomplished sports scientist. Lastly, we will send you on a professional placement so that you can put all of your newly learned skills into practice.
The applied focus of this course is supported by contemporary, well-equipped laboratory facilities, including the largest environmental chamber of its kind in Scotland. Experience real-world simulations, from base camp Everest conditions to the challenges of hot and humid climates, especially pertinent in today’s climate crisis. Imagine yourself equipped with a wide range of techniques and working in an interdisciplinary team, providing crucial support to athletes.
The entry requirement for this course is a Bachelor (Honours) Degree at a 2:2 or above, or equivalent. We look for candidates to have a background in sport science, human physiology, coaching science, sports nutrition or other biological science degrees that contains a substantial element of exercise physiology/ psychology in order to be eligible for this programme.
We may consider lesser qualifications if you have sufficient relevant work experience within the industry.

By studying applied sport science at Edinburgh Napier University, you will develop the academic, practical and soft skills to become a sports science practitioner, go into a research-based career or even onto PhD study. Many of our graduates have been employed by the Scottish Institute of Sport, National governing bodies including the Scottish Football Association, Scottish Rugby Union, Scottish Canoe and CIMSPA. What does a performance sport scientist do?
As a performance sport scientist, you will be responsible for uncovering athletic success through science. You will aim to enhance athletes’ performance through biomechanics, nutrition, sport psychology and physiology to optimise their training programme. You will most likely use a range of lab equipment, technology and measurement tools. In this role, you will be expected to be an excellent communicator, and have strong analytical, practical and problem-solving skills.
