Prashant Kirar

We are delighted to award our Masters Compare Scholarship for 2024-25 to Prashant Kirar, who is studying an MSc in Computer Science with Placement at Manchester Metropolitan University.(MMU). Prashant is a BSc Electronics graduate of Sri Venkateswara College, University of Delhi. Prashant has shared the experience of deciding to study in the UK, choosing to study computer science at MMU and adjusting to life on campus. Prashant started the masters in September 2024.

Can you tell us about your academic journey so far, and why you wanted to carry on to a masters?

My journey toward a Master’s degree began during my final semester of college. I was at a crossroads, deciding between starting a job or continuing my studies. After weighing the options, my parents encouraged me to pursue further education, knowing that returning to studies later could be challenging. This motivated me to dive into university research, beginning with institutions in India and eventually expanding my scope internationally.
I then focused on preparing for the IELTS while awaiting my final semester results. The day I received both my scores and university offers felt like a turning point, bringing both excitement and relief.

What made you choose to study at MMU? Did you look at a number of universities?

The UK quickly became my top choice, as it aligned well with my priorities for affordability and language. Knowing I wanted a course that complemented my background and opened doors globally, I decided on an MSc in Computer Science, a program promising growth in both my technical knowledge and career prospects. This choice felt like the perfect foundation to build my skills in a field I’m passionate about, shaping my professional future.

Choosing Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) was a clear decision based on its alignment with my career goals, affordable tuition, and a well-designed campus. After securing my offer, I faced delays in my visa process, which was initially nerve-wracking as my course started on September 25. Fortunately, I received my visa in time and arrived at MMU by 11 October, just before the final admission date.

Why did you choose the MSc Computer Science – was it recommended to you?

Pursuing an MSc in Computer Science at MMU is an exciting journey that merges theoretical learning with real-world applications, preparing me to enter the technology field with a solid foundation. Throughout this course, I’m diving into advanced topics, from Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) and Database Systems to cutting-edge areas like Cloud and Enterprise Development. Each module offers a hands-on approach, which is not only aligning with my prior background in electronics and programming but also enhancing my skills in software engineering.

Are you planning to study and work at the same time? If so how will you manage your time?

Yes, I do plan to balance my studies with a part-time job. I have a healthy schedule since my classes are held three days a week, leaving the remaining four days for self-study, exploring, and work.

As you have travelled from India to the UK to study your masters, how have you adjusted to the changes?

Since settling in, I’ve found the supportive MMU community invaluable. My classmates and professors were welcoming, understanding my initial rush to catch up. Their guidance, especially with coursework, helped me quickly adapt, leveraging my background in programming and networks. With their support, I’ve managed to stay on track with assessments and am enjoying the festive atmosphere around campus.

The environment here at MMU is vibrant and inclusive. Every day, I’m building connections, experiencing the UK’s cultural diversity, and learning from peers and mentors alike. MMU’s campus life has offered an enriching experience, balancing academics with new friendships and opportunities for growth.

What advice would you give to students who are thinking about starting a masters in 2025?

I’d advise them to be proactive and organized in their planning - research the course, prepare for the visa process early, and connect with current students. This can help ease the transition and allow them to settle in more smoothly.

What difference will the Masters Compare scholarship mean to you?

The scholarship will primarily help cover my tuition fees so I am incredibly grateful for this support, as it truly eases my academic journey and helps me focus on my studies. Thank you again for this amazing opportunity and for supporting my academic goals.
